Apprenticeship and Work Experience

DWB Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship is a structured programme that combines paid work with training and study. Apprentices gain practical experience while developing the skills needed for their role.

They are employed with a salary and holiday entitlement, and on completion receive a recognised qualification, with opportunities to progress further.

Level 3: Business Administrator - Duration: 12-15 months

Apprentices in Business Administration are expected to operate efficiently and professionally, demonstrating strong written and verbal communication skills. A proactive approach to learning and development is essential. This Level 3 programme helps gain the core knowledge, skills and behaviours required to thrive in client-facing and back-office roles. This is a learn on the job apprenticeship, with workshops, regular check ins with your allocated tutor, and an exam in financial services, regulation and Ethics.

Typical positions include financial services administrator, office assistant and customer adviser. Completion of this Financial Services apprenticeship qualification also offers clear progression routes into roles such as Mortgage Adviser, Paraplanner or Financial Adviser.

Key expectations include:

  • Effective time management and prioritisation
  • Use of initiative and sound judgement
  • Problem-solving and decision-making capability
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Responsibilities may involve supporting, developing, and improving administrative services across the organisation. The role provides a foundation for progression into supervisory or management positions.

Entry Requirement:
For the Level 3 Financial Services Administrator apprenticeship, entry requirements are 4–5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), must include English and Maths. This apprenticeship is designed as an entry point into the industry, so it’s well suited to school leavers or those new to financial services.

Level 4: Paraplanner and Financial Adviser – Duration: up to 24 months

The Level 4 Financial Adviser Apprenticeship prepares individuals to deliver professional financial advice within a regulated environment. This Financial Services programme equips apprentices with the essential knowledge, skills and behaviours required to succeed in client-facing roles, supporting financial planners in providing high-quality advice and service.

Through a blend of online learning, tutor support and practical experience, apprentices develop the technical and interpersonal skills needed to assist with financial planning. This includes drafting client reports, preparing financial plans, gathering and analysing data, and supporting advisers with both administrative and technical tasks. Key soft skills such as communication, problem-solving, time management and attention to detail are also developed.

The programme aligns with industry standards and regulatory requirements, including those set by the Financial Conduct Authority, ensuring a strong understanding of professionalism, confidentiality and ethical conduct.

Apprentices are expected to demonstrate:

  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Effective workload management and prioritisation
  • Initiative, problem-solving and sound decision-making
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively

This apprenticeship includes a qualification from the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), approved by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), ensuring full alignment with UK regulatory standards. Apprentices will work towards the Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, a widely recognised qualification enabling the delivery of compliant financial advice.

Core areas of study include:

  • Financial planning
  • Investment strategies
  • Risk management
  • Ethical and professional practice

On successful completion, apprentices are qualified to advise clients on pensions, investments, protection and tax planning within the UK financial advice sector.

Apprentices are expected to take responsibility for their own work and professional development, respond constructively to feedback, and demonstrate initiative and resilience. They should also actively develop essential soft skills, including effective communication and strong attention to detail, alongside maintaining a genuine interest in the industry.

Entry requirement:
For the Level 4 Paraplanner or Financial Planner apprenticeship, candidates will have GCSEs plus A-levels or another Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC. Relevant experience in a financial services environment, or progression from a Level 3 apprenticeship, is commonly accepted in place of formal qualifications.
